Changes to flags at Coburg Town Hall

20 Jan 2025

After 15 months of conflict and a catastrophic loss of civilian life, a ceasefire has been declared in Gaza.

As a diverse, multicultural, and multi-faith community, Merri-bek City Council works to support diversity, promote human rights, and advocate for peace. So many in our community will be hoping and praying for a lasting peace for the people of Gaza, Palestine and Israel.

In October 2023 and March 2024, Merri-bek Council took a number of steps, including calling on the federal government to advocate for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages and prisoners; and provision of funding support to local community groups to assist Palestinian families recently arrived in Merri-bek. Council decided to fly the Palestinian flag on the community flagpole at Coburg Town Hall until there was a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. At all times the Australian flag, the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flags have continued to fly.

The ceasefire is now in place and so flag arrangements at Coburg Town Hall will revert to the usual community flag schedule. The fourth flagpole rotates through the year according to a Community Flag Schedule which includes a number of national and community flags. The Palestinian flag will be flown on relevant dates including on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The flag in place for late January is the Pride rainbow flag.
