Ficus Tree Pruning and Trimming

We are currently undertaking a program of pruning and trimming trees in a number of Merri-bek shopping precincts. This is routine maintenance to ensure the safety, health, and aesthetic appeal of the trees in our area.

Trees Affected

The primary focus of our pruning efforts is the Ficus hillii, a species of fig that is prevalent along these streets. These trees have been a part of our community for many years, and their maintenance is crucial to keeping them healthy and beautiful.

Purpose of Pruning

Our usual pruning activities involve shaping the trees to keep them away from overhead power lines, buildings, and traffic. This not only ensures safety but also maintains the visual appeal of our streets.

As these trees mature and are pruned back regularly, large branches tend to grow out from the centre of the tree. Over time, this results in a dense middle section that is challenging to shape and prune effectively. To address this issue, we have recently undertaken a more extensive pruning effort to cut back the solid branches from the centre of the trees.

Benefits of the Pruning Process

This method is a standard practice that will yield several benefits:

  • Improved Growth: By cutting back the larger branches, the trees will regrow and bush up again, promoting healthier and more robust growth.
  • Better Shade: As the trees regrow, they will provide more shade, enhancing the comfort and enjoyment of our streets.
  • Easier Maintenance: The new growth will be easier to manage and shape in the future, ensuring continued safety and aesthetic appeal.
  • Reduced Impacts: Reduced impacts to business signage, parking and pedestrian access.
