Cardinal Road, Glenroy going green with new park

Council’s plan to create a park at Cardinal Road, Glenroy has received a major boost with a $1.3 million grant from the Victorian Government as part of the Local Parks Program.

The 1400 square-metre former Salvation Army site will bring more green space to the northern suburbs of Merri-bek.

Mayor, Cr Annalivia Carli Hannan said it is important that Council continues to create more open spaces for the growing population in Merri-bek to enjoy.

“Our population is projected to grow by an extra 50,000 people and 23,000 households by 2036. Having plenty of parks, greenery and open spaces will enhance the liveability of Merri-bek into the future.”

“Access to parks and green space keeps us healthier, both mentally and physically. We are working hard to make sure that everyone in Merri-bek has access to well-designed accessible parks close to where they live” said Cr Carli Hannan.

Council purchased the Cardinal Road site in November 2019. Demolition of buildings occurred in the second half of 2020. 

In December 2020, community members told Council their ideas for the park online.

Council will now prepare a draft concept plan for the community to provide input on, before developing the final concept plan.

This project is a key outcome of Council’s Park Close to Home Framework, a long-term plan to ensure everyone living in the City of Merri-bek is within 500 metres walking distance of a park or open space, and within 300 metres for those living in the City’s busiest, high-density areas.

Construction of the Cardinal Street pocket park will begin in 2021 with expected completion by June 2022.

The Cardinal Road Park Close to Home Project is supported by the Victorian Government through the Local Parks Program.
