A to Z guide to waste and recycling

We know recycling and disposing of your household waste correctly can sometimes be confusing, but there are many options to dispose of unwanted items. Use our A to Z guide to find common household items and the different ways to discard them. This list includes both Council and other services.

Check to see whether your item can be repaired or recycled first, through a drop-off point. Items could also be placed in one of your kerbside bins or disposed of via other services that may include a fee.

Other recycling services

  • Recycling stations for select household items are available at our Customer Service Centres. Find out more about these recycling drop-off points on our Recycling stations page.

  • Residents can recycle eligible drinking containers via the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) and receive a 10-cent refund for each container. Look for the 10c mark on the drink container label. It is often located near the barcode. Find your nearest refund point using the interactive map on the CDS Victoria website.

  • Merri-bek has many charities and repair facilities that will accept donations or help you fix items. Please consider these options before disposing of your household waste. Find out more about the different types of services available on our Reducing waste page.
