Brunswick completed projects

You can find information about almost all of our recently completed projects on Conversations Merri-bek. The information on this page is only from projects in Brunswick that started before we were using Conversations Merri-bek, or projects that didn't require community input to be completed.

2020 to 2021 projects

  • We have completed upgrading  Balfe Park play space and park infrastructure. This is a part of the play space renewal under our 2016 to 2020 Merri-bek Play Strategy.

    These works have included fitness equipment, a gravel circuit path around the oval, central concrete access path and replacement gates.

    Balfe Park play space upgrade documents:

  • In 2020 we completed road reconstruction on Davies Street, Brunswick between Payne Street and Barrow Street. This project had a budget of $420,613 and construction was completed between August and December 2020.

    The works included:

    • Reconstructing the existing concrete kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between the new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.

  • In 2020 we completed road reconstruction on the bluestone laneway at the rear of 23 to 33 Donald Street, 22 to 32 Davies Street, and the side of 21 to 23 Donald Street and 5 to 7 Payne Street in Brunswick. This project had a budget of $427,790 and construction was completed between October and December 2020.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits
    • The reconstructing the existing bluestone pavement.

  • In 2020 we completed road reconstruction on the bluestone laneway at the rear of 32-90 Henkel Street, 1-51 Lyle Street, and 9-19 Percy Street in Brunswick. This project had a budget of $520,000 and construction was completed between February and October 2020.

    The works included:

    • The construction of new underground drainage system and pits
    • The reconstruction the existing bluestone pavement

  • In 2020 we completed road reconstruction on Henkel Street, Brunswick between Percy Street and Alexander Street. This project had a budget of $995,000 and construction was completed between February and October 2020.

    The works included:

    • Upgrading the existing underground drainage system and constructing new pits
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between new kerb and footpath edge
    • The reconstruction of footpath
    • The reinstatement of nature strips

  • In 2020 we upgraded the playground at Hudson Reserve. This was part of the the Merri-bek Play Strategy 2016-20. The upgrade created a fresh play space including nature play and new play equipment. We also kept a playground favourite by refurbishing the ‘flying saucer’ spinner.

  • In 2020 we completed road reconstruction works on James Street, Brunswick West between Hope Street and Whitby Street. We undertook consultation with the residents in May 2019 and the design was completed in July 2019. This project had a budget of $435,910 and construction was completed between December 2019 and February 2020.

    The works included:

    • The construction of new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.

  • In 2020 we upgraded the playground at Johns Reserve. The old playground had some much loved pieces of equipment that we refurbished and kept. The playground and surrounds also received some new features. The details of this project are in the final concept plan.

  • In 2020 we completed drainage upgrade works on Michael Street and Saxon Street in Brunswick. These works were to address flooding at the intersection of Michael Street and Saxon Street during storm events.

    The location was identified a flooding hotspot in the recently completed flood mapping project across Merri-bek. The flood mapping project has identified and quantified risks which previously existed within the City of Merri-bek but were potentially unknown.

    The budget for this project was $1,556,105 and construction was completed between November 2019 and June 2020.

    The works included:

    • The construction of underground tanks under Michael Street from Sydney Road to the Upfield railway Line.
    • Additional pits and underground pipes along Michael Street and Saxon Street to capture and direct stormwater into the underground storage tanks.

  • We have completed upgrading <a href="https://www.moreland.vic.gov.au/exploring-moreland/parks-and-gardens/find-a-park/douglas-reserve/?st=Douglas%20Reserve&a=autocomplete&q=douglas%20reserve">&nbsp;Douglas Reserve</a> play space and park infrastructure. This is a part of the play space renewal under our 2016 to 2020 Merri-bek Play Strategy.

    These works have included a new engaging play space with nature-based play, a gathering space, street art and improved park infrastructure.

2019 to 2020 projects

  • In 2019 we upgraded the park and playground at Allard Park. This was part of the the Merri-bek Play Strategy 2016-20. This work added refurbished and new play equipment, and recycled materials. We also added exercise stations and circuit path improvements. The playground's theme is bikes. This theme came from existing play equipment and increased local bike use. 

    The Australian Government gave us a grant for this project. The grant was part of Sport Australia's Community Sport Infrastructure Grant Program.

    Allard park playground upgrade documents:

  • In 2019 we completed the forecourt improvements for the Brunswick Mechanics Institute and the Brunswick Town Hall. The project aimed to enhance the civic and cultural focus of the precinct, and to improve the public realm of these civic buildings. 

    Public consultation was held in June 2018 and closed in July 2018. This included a survey and virtual reality information sessions where participants could use virtual reality to see what the forecourts would look like. The budget for the design of this pace was $70,000, and there was $1.2 million for construction.

    The new design for the public space includes:

    • An outdoor civic space with reclaimed bluestone and timber seating.
    • New timber decking.
    • Improved lighting, including coloured lighting for the building's facade.
    • Landscaping, including lawn and rain gardens to address the urban heat island effect.
    • A footpath upgrade including feature paving and new kerb and channel.
    • Additional seating near tram and bus stops.
    • An upgrade to street furniture including a drinking fountain.
    • The installation of bronze inlay artworks on the pavement.
    • Mural art on the prominent wall of Retreat Hotel.

    Brunswick Mechanics Institute and Brunswick Town Hall forecourt improvements documents:

  • In 2019 we completed construction on Cumming Street, Brunswick West between Melville Road and Duggan Street. The budget for this project was $1,317,000 and construction was completed between December 2018 and July 2019.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • The construction of a tree lined median along the road.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between the new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.

  • In 2019 we upgraded the playground at Denzil Don Reserve. This was part of the the Merri-bek Play Strategy 2016-20. This work added a range of new play equipment and the creation of a nature play area.

  • In 2019 we upgraded the playground at Jacobs Reserve. This was part of the Merri-bek Play Strategy 2016-20. This work added a flying fox, nature play, a drinking fountain, and the use of wood to match the park environment.

  • In 2019 we redeveloped the park at Shiels Reserve and created a new bird habitat. We created new spaces for active play and nature play, a barbecue area, and a circuit path with seating. We also added vegetation to add to the local birdlife's habitat. Near this new vegetation we created observation pods with information about this habitat

    Sheils Reserve park redevelopment and new bird habitat:

  • In 2019 we completed car park reconstruction on the public car parks at Rosser Street and Wilkinson Street, Brunswick. We undertook consultation with the residents in June 2019. This project had a budget of $215,000 for the Rosser Street Car Park, and $220,000 for the Wilkinson Street Car Park. Construction was completed between August and November 2019.

    The works included:

    • The construction of new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing concrete and bluestone kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing car park pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt car park surface.
    • Placing new line-markings for parking bays.

  • In 2019 we completed reconstruction works on the rear laneway behind 21-55 Newman Street in Brunswick West between Straw Street and Wallace Street. The budget for this project was $367,000 and construction was completed between November 2018 and April 2019.

    The works comprised:

    • Reconstructing the existing concrete kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone pavement.

  • In 2019 we completed reconstruction works on the rear laneway behind 56-72 Hope Street in Brunswick between Davison Street and Osborne Street. The budget for this project was $394,400 and construction was completed between February and June 2019.

    The works included:

    • Reconstruction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone pavement.

2018 to 2019 projects

  • In 2018 we completed laneway reconstruction works on the bluestone laneway between 26A-44 Cliff Street and 71-91 Hope Street, Brunswick. The budget for this project was $340,000 and construction was completed between February and March 2018.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • The reconstruction the existing bluestone pavement on a porous concrete base.

  • In 2018 we completed a pavilion upgrade at Dunstan Reserve in Brunswick. This project upgraded existing facilities and had a budget of $841,000.

  • In 2018 we upgraded the play space at Fraser Reserve. This was part of the Merri-bek Play Strategy. We renovated the existing play equipment, added a basket swing, and built a nature play area. We also built fencing along the street frontage near the play space for added safety. On top of this we installed a drinking fountain, picnic table, and extra garden beds and trees.

  • In 2018 we opened a new enclosed dog park at Gilpin Park in Brunswick. This was part of our Domestic Animal Management Plan. The enclosed area has two access gates. There are signs at the entrances to the enclosure. These signs tell owners what we expect of them and their dogs while they are at Gilpin Park. The whole of Gilpin Park remains an off leash park and local laws apply.

  • In 2018 we completed streetscape improvements on the Holmes-Nicholson-Moreland Shopping Strip. This was part of our Shopping Strip Renewal Program. The aim was to revitalise the area and improve the pedestrian amenity, walkability and presentation of the shopping strip.

    We distributed a survey in November 2016 to seek community feedback on the streetscape improvement. The feedback we received informed the development of the Final Concept Design Plan. This plan sought to address various issues including safety, amenity, and the presentation of the streetscape.

    Council officers held an Information Session to discuss the community's comments and feedback on the Draft Concept Design, at the Holmes-Nicholson-Moreland Shopping Strip on 21 March 2017.

    The budget for this project was $1 million, and construction was completed between April and October 2018.

    Key improvements included:

    • Footpath upgrades including paving, and kerb and channel
    • Landscaping including new street trees
    • An upgrade of street furniture
    • Installing additional bike hoops

    Holmes-Nicholson-Moreland shopping strip documents:

  • In 2018 we completed reconstruction works on Ingham Street in Brunswick. The budget for this project was $207,000 and construction was completed between September and December 2018.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings and footpaths.

  • In 2018 we completed road reconstruction on Perrett Street and Coral Street, Brunswick West. We undertook consultation with the residents in May 2017 and design was completed in July 2017. This project had a budget of $560,000 and construction was completed between February and June 2018.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel. The levels were altered to flatten the road and improve vehicle access into properties.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between the new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.

  • In 2018 we completed public space upgrades on Saxon Lane in Brunswick. This area is part of the Brunswick Civic and Cultural Precinct. Our aim was to improve the pedestrian environment and connectivity of Saxon Street, and create an attractive and usable community space. The budget for this project was $350,000.

    Consultation events took place from 2015 to early 2016 and these informed our community visions for the space. Feedback was used to develop a draft Saxon Street Concept Design. In December 2017 we held a community drop-in session to coincide with a mailout seeking feedback on a proposed Saxon Street Concept Design.

    Key improvements were:

    • A new side entrance from Brunswick Library
    • New surfacing
    • Landscaping including large canopy trees and garden beds
    • New street furniture such as seats, small stage, drinking fountain
    • Creating an informal space for community use
    • The redirection of water underground from library roofs to benefit the planted areas, reduce runoff down the street, and also work around the many underground services that exist on the site.
