Books

Books for adults

There are novels (fiction), information books, reference books and graphic novels. There are new books regularly in the libraries including best sellers, recent releases and award-winning books. We regularly make Top 20 recommendations, fiction and non-fiction titles we think you shouldn't miss! You can only borrow two of these titles at a time, for two weeks, with one renewal.

Books for young people

There are novels, talking books and graphic novels for young people. We regularly make Top 5 recommendations for both YA and junior levels - these are titles we think you'll love as much as we do. You can only borrow two titles from each level at a time, for two weeks, with one renewal.

Books for children

There are children’s novels and information books. For younger children there are also picture books, board books, talking and rhyming books. Children’s books are available in many community languages. Some of our children's books are colour-coded.

Orange stripes: These are easy information picture books suitable for young children. Subject areas include: counting and alphabet, shapes, colours and art, animals, transport, places people live, all about people, festivals and food, space, maths, technology and environment.

Green stripes: These are books that are suitable for children who are learning to read. There are a number of different series providing opportunities for exposure to lots of words. 

Magazines

We have many different formats of magazines you can borrow, including popular magazines about art, computers, cookery, craft, current affairs, fashion, gardening, health and fitness, music and parenting. Magazines are available for adults, teenagers and children.

Newspapers

Access Global NewsBank offers newspaper coverage from around the globe and across a wide range of subject areas, letting you search for topics and information. You can also browse titles by date, including full image editions of The AgeThe Herald-Sun and The Australian.

Other newspapers available to view online include: 

  • The National Indigenous Times website has a focus on indigenous business, justice for Stolen Generations survivors, fashion and the arts, sport, Voice, Treaty and Truth, and deaths in custody.
  • The Brunswick Voice website is an independent news project founded in 2021 to publish high-quality, public-interest journalism about news, events and people in the suburb of Brunswick.

English language hard copy newspapers are available daily. Titles include The Age, Herald Sun, The Australian, and Australian Financial Review. The Moreland Leader, The Weekly Times are available weekly.

Newspapers are also available in community languages. Check which library has your language.

CDs

A variety of different types of music CDs can be borrowed including: international and Australian rock and popular music, reggae, opera, classical, jazz, Australian Indigenous music and local music CDs.

DVDs

There are DVDs of movies, some television series, documentaries and music concerts.

Large print books and magazines

There is a large print section for adult readers in each library. Anyone may borrow a large print book. A large print edition of Reader’s Digest magazine can be borrowed from the Brunswick, Coburg or Glenroy Libraries. The large print section also includes books in a font that may be helpful for dyslexic readers.

Local Studies

The Local Studies collection includes a wide range of materials relating to the local history of the area now known as Merri-bek. There are books, magazines, newspapers, microfiche, photographs and other historical records at Brunswick, Coburg and Glenroy libraries. Some photographs, plans and newsletters have been digitised and are available in the library catalogue.

Talking books

We have a wide range of talking books for adults, young people and children. They are available in CD and MP3 formats.

Collection for readers with dyslexia

There are large print books printed in a font that may be helpful for people with dyslexia. Adult level books are shelved in the large print section, while books for young people and children are in those areas.
