Change parking restrictions in your street

If your street has no existing parking restrictions, or if the existing parking restrictions are preventing residents from parking on their street, you can request to introduce or change parking restrictions.

View our Parking Management Policy (DOC)

What parking restriction changes does Council consider?

If there are no parking restrictions at all on a street, we will first consider introducing timed 2 hour parking.

If the 2 hour restrictions are still making it difficult for residents on your street to find a park, we will consider shorter times parking restrictions.

If we need to, we will then consider only allowing those with residential parking permits to park on the street.

  • You should always talk to your neighbours before you request any parking restriction changes. That way you can find out how much support there is for your proposed changes.

To apply, you need to complete Residential Parking Restrictions application form (Word 135Kb) and do one of the following:

    • submit the form online (make sure you mention it is for the Transport team)
    • post the form to Merri-bek City Council, Locked Bag 10, Merri-bek 3058
    • take the application to one of our Customer Service Centres

After you apply, we will assess your application.

  • Council Transport Engineers assess the application in accordance with the Council Parking Management Policy (DOC 184Kb).

Council surveys the owners and occupiers in the impacted area to determine the level of support. Council will only install the restrictions if:

    • at least 25 per cent of the affected area responds, and
    • at least 60 per cent of the responses are in support of the proposal.

Council then advises the surveyed owners and occupiers of the outcome of the survey.

If supported, the parking restriction signage will be installed in four to six weeks.

Eligible owners and occupiers can apply for resident and visitor parking permits.
