Weave Together: A Community Tapestry Workshop with Andrew Chan
Join Andrew Chan, also known as thecatwhoknits, for a hands-on circular weaving workshop where creativity and storytelling come together as part of the Merri-bek Queer Audio Tour launch.
Textiles have long been woven into the fabric of queer history, from acts of resistance to profound memorials like the Memorial Quilt—a poignant symbol of lives lost to HIV and the power of collective remembrance. Together, we’ll honour this legacy by creating community tapestries that celebrate connection and resilience. As we weave yarn into circular looms, we’ll share stories, reflect on our histories, and imagine queer futures. No experience is required, and all materials will be provided.
Merri-bek Queer audio tour launch & workshop:
Date/time: 6 Feb, 6pm to 8pm
Venue: Michelle Guglielmo Park, 260 Sydney Rd Brunswick.
Free. Bookings recommended.
About the Merri-bek Queer Audio Tour
Join us for the launch of the Queer Histories/Queer Futures audio tour podcast, documenting the collective histories of LGBTQIA+ organising, activism and community in Merri-bek. Featuring a free community picnic, panel discussion and all-ages workshop to celebrate the launch of this groundbreaking community history project.
Despite having one of the highest populations of LGBTQIA+ identifying people in Victoria, there is a striking lack of documented and published LGBTQIA+ histories in Merri-bek. Our Merri-bek Queer Audio Tour seeks to address this lack of community history by creating an accessible audio tour to celebrate Merri-bek’s LGBTQIA+ histories and community aspirations.
Queer Histories/Queer Futures is a Lee Ellis working group project of Merri-bek Libraries, supported by Merri-bek City Council.
The Merri-bek Queer Audio Tour launch is presented as part of Misdumma Festival 2025.
