What is a council plan?

Our council plan is a very important document.

It sets out the vision for the future of Merri-bek and how we will achieve this vision over the next 4 years.

The plan talks about what we will do to meet our community’s needs and deal with local issues.

Moreland is a local government area in the inner north of Melbourne:

188,762 residents

23% more people expected by 2036

1 in 3 residents born overseas

140 different languages spoken

36% renters

48,271 local jobs

What is a council plan based on?

The first step in writing a council plan was identifying the community’s vision for Merri-bek.

You can read more about what our vision is and how we wrote it on the next page.

What is in the plan?

Our Council Plan 2021-25 has 5 themes:

  • An environmentally proactive Merri-bek
  • Moving and living safely in Merri-bek
  • A healthy and caring Merri-bek
  • Vibrant spaces and places in Merri-bek
  • An empowered and collaborative Merri-bek

You can read more about these themes and examples of what we will do to achieve them on this site.

Our plan details lots of different ways we will achieve our community vision. It sets out the strategies, initiatives and projects we will deliver. This includes how we will improve our community’s health and wellbeing.

The plan also says how we will measure success.

How was the plan written?

We talked to the community, Merri-bek Councillors and staff to put our new council plan together.

After we wrote a draft plan, we asked the community what they thought. We then updated the plan.

Our Councillors formally adopted the Council Plan 2021-25 at a Council Meeting on Wednesday 20 October 2021.

This council plan is the first we have created under the new Local Government Act 2020.
