Our 4-bin waste service started in July 2023.

You can no longer put glass bottles and jars in your yellow-lidded mixed recycling bin.

Some residents need to take their glass bottles and jars to a glass recycling drop-off point.

This mostly affects residents in:

  • Large apartment buildings
  • Certain residential developments.
  • Some densely populated streets

Glass recycling drop-off points are easy to find and have purple-lidded bins.

If you need to use a glass recycling drop-off point, we notified you by mail.

You can take eligible drink containers, like aluminium cans and glass or plastic bottles to your nearest Container Deposit Scheme refund point. You get a 10 cent refund for every eligible container. Find your nearest refund point on the CDS website.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Broken glass makes other items like cardboard, paper and plastic hard to recycle. By putting your

glass bottles and jars in a separate bin or drop-off point, more of it can be recycled into new things.

It also reduces contamination in your mixed recycling bin, making sure that paper, card and plastics can be recovered effectively, improving the quality and value of these materials to be turned into new products.

Glass does not degrade through the recycling process, so it can be recycled again and again.

  • Most glass recycling drop-off points will have their bins collected weekly.

We will regularly monitor and review the collection frequency and number of bins at each drop-off point to ensure they are meeting the needs of the serviced properties.

  • To meet the State Government’s requirements, the majority of households across Merri-bek will have their own glass recycling bin or use a shared bin if you live in a unit, townhouse, or apartment with communal land to store bins.

Glass recycling drop-off points will only be used by properties identified by Council with unique needs. These include large apartment buildings, certain developments and some densely populated streets that do not have space to store their own glass recycling bins.
